Short project description: Improve management of game parks and anti-poaching operations, protect local communities from adverse effects of elephants.

Description of the consulting services: Technical assistance and infrastructure programme aimed at strengthening the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to manage game parks containing elephant populations, reduce levels of poaching, reduce the high levels of conflict between local communities and elephants, and foster an applied research and monitoriong programme that would support management. The project was implemented by KWS with a Programme Coordinator reporting directly to the Director of KWS.

Title of consulting services provided: Elephant Conservation and Community Wildlife Programme, Mid-term Evaluation

Description of services provided: The Company conducted a mid-term evaluation of the EDF-funded project, arranging for 7 senior level Consultants to visit Kenya over a two month period to analyse the KWS survey and poaching databases, conduct workshops and meetings with the main institutional stakeholders, and inspect project sites throughout the national network of Parks and Reserves. The Company brought together three members of the IUCN elephant specialist group, an international expert on park management, an international expert on resource economics, a scientist specialising in community-wildlife issues in Kenya, and a specialist in electric fence construction to assist the EC and KWS with a number of sensitive community and wildlife issues. The Company prepared recommendations for completing phase I, and for directing future KWS operations in biodiversity conservation, anti-poaching, and resolutions of human-wildlife conflicts.
