Short project description: Investigation of the biology of pollinator and parasitic figwasps in wild fig species of central Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.Description of the research programme: The Company’s research programme on fig wasp biology, with emphasis on competition, oviposition and behaviour inside the fig syconium, falls within the wider remit of the evolutionary programme of the Science and Engineering Research Council, which is itself concerned with elucidating the roles of natural and sexual selection in the evolution of complex behaviours, structures and communities. |

Title of consulting services provided: Study of the Insect Pollinators of Wild Figs and their Parasites.Description of services provided: The Company has undertaken the following reseach projects:- 1) Comparative studies of wild figs and fig wasp species in lowland and sub-montane forests of W. Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak and Sumatra; 2) Studies of the symbiosis between wild figs (dioecious and monoecious species) and their insect pollinators in lowland rainforest, W. Malaysia. 3) Investigations of life history, sexual selection, and mate competition in pollinator fig wasps and their parasites in wild figs of lowland and submontane rainforest, W. Malaysia. Results were published in the Biological Journal of the Linnaean Society (Vol. 26, pp. 69-81) and in Animal Behaviour (Vol 35 pp. 488-506; Vol 38 pp. 186-193; Vol 39 pp. 434-443).Staff provided: Dr M.G.
