Short project description: EC Mission to evaluate the EC project for the improvement of conservation in the Serengeti National Park through strengthened Park services.

Description of the consulting services: The project’s principal inputs were maintenance and expansion of the road network, assistance with relocation of the HQ to outside the Park, improved tourism facilities, strengthening law enforcement systems, and providing assistance with education and extension work in the surrounding communities. Serengeti is the World’s premier heritage site, protecting the largest remaining game migration which is severely threatened by illegal hunting and encroachment.

Title of consulting services provided: Mid-Term Review of Serengeti Conservation and Development Project.

Description of services provided: The Company provided an expert in Protected Area management to assess the appropriateness of the project design, of progress in implementation and of project impact, making recommendations regarding the reorientation of the project design, with regard to law enforcement, education and extension programmes in the surounding communities, which currently constitute the greatest threat to the Park’s long-term future. Village workshops were organised to assess the extent of human-elephant conflicts and the effectiveness of community conservation. The Company provided a Protected Area Specialist as part of a four-person Mission for the EC.
